MODENA CITY RAMBLERS

Virus Concerti presents:
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS
Wednesday 12 May 2010
MODENA CITY RAMBLERS BIOGRAPHY
Modena City Ramblers are an important and consolidated phenomenon on the Italian rock music scene. They mix folk and "world" influences with ska and rock.

The band made up of people who share a dream: music is one of the paths that could lead to Utopia. This belief has come from the lessons of the masters of folk music along with the philosophy of the punk revolution.

This music is rich in colour. There's the mandolin drawn from Italian folklore and the Celtic tin whistle. There's Woody Guthrie's guitar and the Latin and African percussion of the slave workers of the two Continents. There's the power of the electric guitar and the drums and there's also the rhythm of the violin and bouzuki and the strength of singing influenced by punk. There's also love for The Pogues, The Clash and Mano Negra and, in the lyrics, passion for Latin-American contemporary literature, from Gabriel Garcia Marquez to Luis Sepúlveda. The result of all this is the so-called "Celtic patchanka".

STU HAMM + John Wheatcroft + Danny Gill + Andy Edwards

Rock For Alzheimer's presents:
STU HAMM
+ John Wheatcroft + Danny Gill + Andy Edwards
Thursday 11 March 2010
A one-off gig at London's famous Dingwalls club in support of the Alzheimer's Research Trust charity.

Stuart Hamm - One of the World's most influential bass players:
Through his innovative work as a solo artist and his contributions as a sideman to Joe Satriani and Steve Vai, Stuart Hamm has firmly established himself as one of the most influential electric bassists of the past half-century. Extending the non-traditional function of the electric bass previously revolutionized by Jaco Pastorius and Stanley Clarke in the 1970s, Hamm helped to reshape the contemporary concept of the bass guitar as an unaccompanied instrument with the utilization of polyphonic, two-handed tapping, slapping and popping techniques, chords, and harmonics. Although Hamm certainly wasn't the first bass player to debut during the 80s and employ an unorthodox approach to playing the electric bass, he was undoubtedly at the forefront of his generation who effectively fused the application of these unconventional techniques.
As one of today's leading bassists, Hamm has released four critically-acclaimed studio recordings. On Radio Free Albemuth (1988), Kings Of Sleep (1989), The Urge (1991), and Outbound (2000), Hamm showcased his unique style of playing the bass as a lead instrument both within a solo environment and various ensemble formats on a genre-spanning spectrum of repertoire that merged rock, jazz, fusion, classical, country, and urban sounds.

Influential British Jazz-Fusion guitarist, John Wheatcroft:
John leads a busy double-life as a performer and an educator, recently completing world tours with both Carl Palmer (ELP) and John Jorgenson (Elton John/ Hellecasters). He has performed with artists as diverse as Mike Stern, Billy Cobham and Chad Smith and is a regular contributor to both Guitar Techniques and Guitarist magazines.
In demand as a clinician for academic institutions such as London's Guildhall, John is currently completing a book for Shott Publications. John currently holds the position of Head of Guitar at London's Guitar-X, part of the prestigious Tech Music Schools group.

London based, multi-talented bass player, Dave Marks:
Dave will be part of the "John Wheatcroft Trio", for this show but, His playing, recording and production credits span a wide range of bands and artists, including:
Larry Carlton, The Stanton Moore Trio, Albert Lee, Carl Palmer, D:Ream, Ola Onabule, Paul Carrack, Chris Difford . . . The list is long and impressive!

Outstanding Rock Guitarist Danny Gill:
A former pupil of Joe Satriani, Danny is the co-author of Musicians Institutes Rock Lead Guitar series - a complete course in soloing that includes the books Rock Lead Basics, Rock Lead Techniques and Rock Lead Performance. He has also written the books Practice Trax for Guitar and Modern Rock Rhythm Guitar. At MI Danny has taught rock lead guitar, rock rhythm guitar, single string techniques and various live performance workshops. In addition Danny has released 2 CD's with his band Speak No Evil on Universal Records. As a writer, his songs have appeared on numerous TV shows including 'The Osbournes' and 'Touched By An Angel' as well as motion picture soundtracks such as 'Insomnia' and 'Under Seige'. Now key contributor to the Licklibrary team.

ALBERTA CROSS

SJM presents:
ALBERTA CROSS
Monday 15 March 2010

"Stadium rock with soul." 4/5 MOJO

"Outsider music to lift both the heart and the roof." 4/5 Q

"Thrilling and impassioned rock, full of heart, soul and unease. Theirs is a ravaged but exhilarating world." Daily Mirror 4/5

"The wall of gut-wrenching sound will send shivers down your spine." The Sun

Following their critically acclaimed Autumn released debut album 'Broken Side Of Time', New York based soul-drenched rockers Alberta Cross kick-off 2010 with the single release of live favourite and stand-out album cut 'Old Man Chicago' on March 8th. With a video shot in LA's Viper Rooms and the Catskill Mountains outside of New York by director Jess Holzworth (who recently directed and produced Beck, Basement Jaxx and The Slits), the song now has the perfect visual representation for it's earthy swagger and guitarist/vocalist Petter Ericson Stakee's soaring and heartfelt vocal performance.

West London's own Mumford & Sons have already declared their love for the track, playing 'Old Man Chicago' during an interview on Zane Lowe's Radio One show and inviting the band to tour with them live on air!

Since the release of 'Broken Side Of Time' at the end of September 2009, the band have toured rigorously across the US, Europe and the UK, sharing stages with the likes of Neil Young and Them Crooked Vultures among many others, climaxing in a breathtaking, totally sold-out headline show in Shepherd's Bush prestigious Bush Hall venue.

Currently on their first ever headline tour throughout the US and following a sold-out debut show at LA's Troubador, Alberta Cross went onto play Santa Barbara's infamous Muddy Waters Coffee Club. As their set time drew closer, the crowd of fans wanting to get into the venue had grown to such a size that the local police were called and invaded the stage to control the gathering - leading to the band having to play a second late night set to those stuck outside just to keep the peace !

March 2010 sees the band return to stages in the UK, for a string of dates including a specially requested support to the aforementioned Mumford & Sons at the Shepherds Bush Empire, alongside dates www.myspace.com/albertacross

"An intoxicating mix of apocalyptic riffs, sob-worthy singalongs and brooding blues." 8/10 NME

"The plaintive dizziness of Peter Ericson Stakee's vocals is offset by crashing guitars and wind-swept epic aesthetics that recall The Verve's early post-shoegazing incarnation with the Dave Mathews Band (including one at London's enormous O2 arena) as well as their own headline gig at Dingwalls.

GOOD SHOES

SJM presents:
GOOD SHOES
Wednesday 21 April 2010
'No Hope, No Future'

New Album Released on 18th January 2010 on Brille Records

Good Shoes have always been an intriguing and contrary force. When their debut 'Think Before You Speak' was released in 2007, it was heralded as one of the years indie successes, with its fashionable jangly-guitar and pop-perfect tunes. However underneath its racing chart-friendly heart lay a band with an unbreakable punk ethos and a true independent soul. A band who (-controversial-) made music simply for love of creation, who similarly made their own distinctive and charmingly homemade videos. A band who never entertained commercial success, but who played speeded up, ecstatic punk sets that caused muso's hearts to explode and people to ram-raid Morden bandstands.

Such ethos and unbridled energy shows no sign of faltering on Good Shoes second album 'No Hope, No Future' (out on Brille Records on 18th January). Self written, recorded and produced (naturally) in Morden basements and bedrooms for a grand total of £5,000 (sandwiches included), 'No Hope, No Future' has a character and emotive rawness sadly lost on the usual predictably shiny and overly–produced second album. Even the album artwork is D.I.Y. with Good Shoes fans being invited to Crystal Palace pool to be shot for the sleeve. As always, it's a family affair.

That's not to say some things haven't changed. The off-kilter indie-pop of 'The Way My Heart Beats' and sleazy disco-flecked 'Under Control' are unmistakably Good Shoes - instant indie dance-floor classics with head-spinning riffs (but with just a little less 'jangly' then before). But when album track 'Then She Walks Away' hits with it's pleading vocals laced in regret and 'Everything You Do', a dark droning track of moody atmospherics and disenchanted vocals ("everything you do, everything you say, always ends up turning out the same"), it's apparent Good Shoes have matured. Some would call it a break-up album, with the universally recognised fear of being on the edge relayed beautifully in 'City By The Sea', but in truth it's the sound of a band evolving, as it should, with a more intricate and at times heavier sound. It's the unstoppable creative force that is Good Shoes moving on and up and offering another even better, bolder record. Hail the return of indie's saviors.

Good Shoes release the single 'Under Control' on 4th January with the album 'No Hope, No Future' following on the 18th. Both on Brille Records.
